Classes

Let's speak here about the classes.

When you're foreign students, you can choose the class you want to follow between all the 6 years (master degree included).

All the classes are divided into lectures (where it's all about learning) and seminars (where it's al about practicing).

Depending the teacher and the topic, everything will be in english, but in some classes, they often speak russian as well, so be aware.

At the begining, we had 2 weeks to try the most classes we could before locking our choice. It was good to have a first view of what we'll have to do.

A really bad point was the timetable. It was not like every other timetable you saw (i guess but maybe you're used to this form).

First it was all in russian, so you'd better speak russian or have a friend who can translate. Then, it was ... just have a look here: Kopia_2_Kurs___Mff2_1_3_4k__1_

This is one translated, but it wasn't when the administration send it to us

There are 2 types of class.

The first is the exam class, which are the traditional one, you work the semester and then have an exam at the end.

The second one is a system of pass or fail. You also work the semester but you pass depending of your midterm results and participation during the class. So if you take only pass or fails topics, you'll end sooner.

In the class, there was a lot of different ethnies (most of them were asiatics ethnies).

Teachers are most of the time really nice with forgeign students and they'll always help you to understand if you don't. So it's a good point. don't be shy to ask for something!

For the Students, they were pretty shy, but they were nice with us and friendly.

A cultural difference in the classroom could be that EVERYONE there is cheating during the exam almost all the time ! and there are a bunch of them whom get caught ! They are maybe to lazy to study. But of course, there are some which are really serious and pass exams without cheating ! You should do the same !

Something you should know before going there is that you won't have a student card there, so if you want discount in the cities you should ask for an international student card before leaving your country.

If you like to do sport, the university has its own gym which is well equiped for a university. The tarif is 100 rbl for 45min. But you can also do sports for free like badminton, volley, hand etc. They also have a swimming pool which you can go for free but you'll need a medical document which says that you don't have any skin issue. It can be done in the university hospital (which will be quite expensive) or in your own country as long as it is translated into russian.
